"the cycle of life and death in the forest"

i have always wanted a notebook made of paper bags and now i have one, thanks to my exceptionally talented bookbinding friend and copious amounts of her help/ patience.  the graphic on the cover is a
a photocopy of page 1783, gleaned from a set of 1924 compton's pictured encyclopedia.  it's one of the most perfect descriptions of anything/ everything, i think:

"the caterpillar  eats the leaf, the young wasp eats the caterpillar, the beetle eats the young wasp, the bird eats the beetle.  then the bird dies in some forest tragedy, another beetle comes along and buries him and his remains make the ground rich so that another tree can grow whose leaves another caterpillar will eat."
