cats give it to themselves

do a little healthy reading
big news!
is often little
much to the surprise - not to mention relief - of our hearts
enough hinting
anything that didn't come out must come out anew
i will not bow to patterns of the past
mother always said,
"marry a dentist
it's all in a woman's day"
and dogs who used to scoff
but we've improved
cats give it to themselves

note:  an unposted post, found and posted.  a gifted remnant of an insane day of wayward optimism and lust.  told through the adorable eyes of cats.

cutting advice

have you read any cat food labels lately?
warning:
it's one word to watch out for
1___, 2 ____, 3 ____
there are more than three flavors of death
most people don't know
how many ways there are to kick the can
ex. ______
and how few lifesavors
we really have
look what else i found
if you want good blood
avoid shopping
for mild minty stuff.  of medicine...
and dentists

note:  i started cutting out advertisements from old magazines and pasting them onto my favorite brown paper.  sometimes it's fun to play with the words/ thoughts of the past.

the stylings of peafowl

the toilet paper roll has been my canvas of choice these days.  this one makes me think of peafowl.  i like that thought.  micron pen + colored pencil

and the toilet paper roll doodling continues!  this one c/o of a dear friend's bathroom, post-paper.  here's to modern conveniences! sharpie + colored pencils

it takes a village

if you really loved the environment, you'd live on a toilet paper roll.  sharpie + colored pencils.

still travels (or moving leisure)

oh, the joy of being able to sit still long enough to leisurely doodle!  thanks to two plane rides (west to east + east to west), i had the pleasure of doing so.  here is the results, on graph paper, which is not just for math anymore.  micron pen + colored pencil.

the silent chime of the toilet paper roll

while i love the sounds of wind chimes, i have a new dream of creating a silent one...out of toilet paper rolls.  so far i have two rolls.  the one above is my second.  how many rolls does it take to make a silent wind chime?  stay tuned!  toilet paper roll + sharpie + colored pencil.

great heights at the park

this is a quick sketch i did today of one of those real-life heartwarming scenes that only happens at parks:  a little girl with a super long ponytail down her back flies a kite with the help of a kindly older man who looks mysteriously like santa clause (if santa clause lived in austin).  long live public space!  micron pen + colored pencil.

"the cycle of life and death in the forest"

i have always wanted a notebook made of paper bags and now i have one, thanks to my exceptionally talented bookbinding friend and copious amounts of her help/ patience.  the graphic on the cover is a
a photocopy of page 1783, gleaned from a set of 1924 compton's pictured encyclopedia.  it's one of the most perfect descriptions of anything/ everything, i think:

"the caterpillar  eats the leaf, the young wasp eats the caterpillar, the beetle eats the young wasp, the bird eats the beetle.  then the bird dies in some forest tragedy, another beetle comes along and buries him and his remains make the ground rich so that another tree can grow whose leaves another caterpillar will eat."

goodbye year

the last doodle of 2011, unless another spontaneously arises before midnight.  i found this scrap of thin cardboard in my milk crate o' fun.  its back is secretly streaked with bright green paint -  a stowaway from my summer at bread & puppet.  in the coming year(s), may we all make the best of life's trash!  sharpie + colored pencil + life's trash.

doodle: the next generation

i have not stopped doodling since leaving the job that allowed me copious amounts of uninterrupted paper/ pencil time.  the piece above, however, is the first i've managed to color in for quite a while.  in the left-hand corner is the line: "this heart was empty long before you didn't fill it up." sharpie + colored pencil + emo on notebook paper

the saddest princess

going through my paper bag full of art, i found this not-so happy princess drawn originally from a not-especially royal, but fairly content nude model.  i had schemed a swampy kingdom, but after an entire swamp-free year, decided to cut her out and place her in the wilds of my backyard instead.  sharpie + oil pastel on butcher paper.

doodle formula (or circle with a crown)

a scrap of butcher paper + sharpie marker + colored pencils + many hours on the phone = doodle

on a roll

i found this empty toilet paper roll in the bathroom at work and thought it might make a good surface for doodling.  i really love brown paper and also drawing on a curve, apparently.  sharpie + colored pencil

full plate

this plate kept me occupied for many, many phone calls.  thank you, plate.  and sharpie.  and metallic gel ink pen.

swings together

this little scene was sketched/colored while sitting on a playground structure with grimm the dog, enjoying the sun and trying to ignore the quizzical stares of children and their families.   if only i was small enough to fit in those swings...colored pencil + pen.

parade o' plates

paper plates have quickly become my new favorite doodling surface at work.  i hart round and ridged.  the top two = sharpie and the bottom = colored pencil.

forest friend

this is a portrait of one of my all-time favorite boys, drawn from a happy photo taken several years ago.  back when we were neighbors, we would spend countless hours eating expensive chicken and sizing up fashion designers on reality tv.  i have never personally seen him wear a bird's nest, but i think he looks quite dashing.  colored pencil + sharpie on butcher paper.

puck thinking

sometimes i draw portraits of people in pen that don't necessarily look like them, but turn out fun in other ways.  this is a prime example:  pretty girl turned hairy woodland sprite/ werewolf.  with a bird's nest hat.  micro pen + colored pencil.

purple (rain)

i imagine that PRINCE would appreciate this doodle.  sharpie.

back o' doodle

sometimes i ab·sent·mind·ed·ly draw on the back of things.  pen + colored pencil.

the lost post (carelessly unpublished): blue-prints

i have only a vague recollection of drawing/ writing this, but this is what my former self had to say about it, before my former self forgot to publish it:  "sharpies really like to leave their mark.  permanently.  and on any surface they can get a hold of.  here's a single sharpie doodle sequence:  original, back, and next page print.  3 4 the price of 1 = sharpie L-U-V!"

demon doodle

drawn over the course of many a domestic violence call.  not from heaven, that's for sure.  sharpie.

tomahawk dreams

a remnant of summer.  i have no recollection of when or why i drew this, but i must have been dreaming of tomahawks.  pen.

from trip to trip

started on an airplane and finished in a cubicle.  i swear i'm not on drugs.  pen + colored pencil.

stranger in the air

beach feet self-portrait

a talented book worker gifted me this beautiful little notebook to document my recent family vacation.  here are some of my favorite pages/ memories from the trip.  pen + colored pencil on perfectly textured paper
